Christmas Salver 27th December 2013 @ Essendon Country Club

Well folks its nearly Christmas again which means that you have a golden opportunity to get out of the house and away from the in-laws with your annual golf excuse. Hopefully the weather will be kind and the golf good, but if not there is always the pub afterwards to console yourself in. So make the commitment and drop me a line before the 16th December to confirm your attendance. We have booked  24 tee times and just for a change we are playing a rather more prestigious venue to entice you all out on.

Tee off times are from 10:00 o'clock onwards, so please arrive from 08:30 a.m. for brekkie. We then go out and take on the course. After the golf there will be a jolly nice lunch and of course we will then have the prizegiving with our very own compere making his annual outing and using his speech from last year all over again. ( Be prepared for lots of Harold/Steptoe, Dale Farm wise cracks), but of course it wouldn`t be as much fun without him! Yes our very own Mr Trevor Johnson will be gracing us with his presence!!!

The first tee off will be at 09:30, arrive at 08:30-09:00 for coffee and bacon roll, then 18 holes of golf, followed by a one course lunch and presentation.  Cost of £37.00 for the day.

Brocket Hall - Palmerston Course results

The society were privileged enough to play at Brocket Palmerston Championship course, a fine and testing long course that was in tip top condition even though it had been raining for most of the week.  There were five four balls and all come off the course having had a great time, though it took 5 hours to complete the round and the scores did not necessarily reflect this.  We were fortunate that we only saw a few spells of rain and the conditions were ideal for an enjoyable round of golf.

Many thanks must go to our wooden spoon winner Phil Marlor for arranging a substantial discount for this fine day.

On the day the winners were as follows:  1st Mark Brownjohn - 36 points, 2nd Ian Coath - 35 points, 3rd Danny Horne - 33 points.

The longest drive was won by Woody and nearest the pin was Danny Horne.

Thankfully our reverend Captain Mr Steve Corley did not adopt his pastoral presentation pose this time!!

Brocket Hall Golf Club - Melbourne Course - Friday 13th September

We have managed to secure a fantastic deal for a round of golf only (no food provided) for 5 four balls at the fabulous Melbourne course at Brocket Hall Golf Club.

This event is limited to 20 players (possibly 24) and will cost £40 per person.  First tee off at 11 a.m. and free use of the practice facilities.

If this day out proves to be over-subscribed we will do a ballot and draw out the players for the day.

We need to know by the end of August your availability for the day and payment must be made in advance of the day, one week before the 13th September.

Please reply A.S.A.P. as this is more than likely going to be a one-off.

Results of Whitehill - 12th July 2013

On a beautiful Summer's day, 19 mostly able golfers turned out to play at the sometimes challenging Whitehill golf course.  You couldn't have asked for a nicer day for the society to play, with a nice cool morning that turned into a scorching afternoon, the fairways ran long, the putts were fast and true which led to 3 tier golfing performance from the society members.

The 'numpty' trophy was won by Ed Matthews who was in the lower tier with a couple of others (you know who you are!!).

The second tier consisted of those that couldn't drive or putt but managed to card a half decent score..... somehow! And the top tier consisted of those scoring over 34 points.  Top of the pile was Pete 'Sparrow' Bracey who came in with an astonishing 42 points, pipping Mark Popodolappopodopolus who carded 41 points on his debut performance and in third with a gallant 37 points was Kim King.

Pete cleared up on the day winning nearest the pin and a bottle of vino as his team won on the day.  One last award was the longest drive which was won with a fantastic 296 yard by our very own Julian Calvert!

Our wonderful Captain Mr. Steve Corley (almost CBE) soliloquized Whitehill golf course beautifully in his opening speech and as you can see from the photo below said a little prayer thanking Him for the glorious food on offer on the day......All Praise to our reverend Captain for his gratitude to the hosts - Ehmen!

PS Our Captain is thinking of setting up a Gospel Preachers society soon too.  Please send your cheques made payable to 'Cash' to S. Corley forthwith.

Benidorm Tour & Next Golf Day at Whitehills 12th July 2013.

Well well folks. I do believe that the tour was well received by those that went. The set up was great and the golf courses played fair and rewarded sensible golf rather than attacking play. There were 8 on the tour with 2 newcomers, Phil " The Kid" was on his first golfing trip abroad and Roy Lonhro also came along for the ride and nearly walked off with the Tour trophy. The overall winner was Kevin Tyler who hung in there on the last day to pip the rest of us by a fairly comfortable margin in the end. Below are a few pics of the course and happy chappies on tour.

Crow thank goodness brought along one of Christines dildos and kindly presented it to Kev in the absence of a Tour trophy- our beloved Captain forgot to bring it?? Why Crow brought it heaven only knows I will have to leave that to your imaginations?

It just leaves to remind you all of the anniversary golf day at Whitehills on the 12th July . I have heard from a few of you good people out there but do now need to know numbers ASAP please. Thanks Jules

Results from the Hertfordshire and next golf day - Whitehill 12th July

Ok folks there was a relatively poor turnout for The Hertfordshire, but those that attended reported back that it was a great day out. Dave Brown again organised things and Rocky did a sterling job on the day sorting out the finances-so thanks to you guys. Unfortunately I was unable to make the day and your honourable Captain Mr Steve Corley ( nearly CBE ) oversaw things..........and made a bit of a hash of it from what I hear. Something about wrong trophies????

Anyway on the day Phil "The Kid" Herring saddled up with his array of golf clubs and rode off into the sunset with the 1st prize (again***~**###~~). Well done Phil. He played very well on the day and managed a magnificent 40 points. Steve Corley came second and that is all the info I know.

Ok on to the next golf day. It is at Whitehills again for the 2nd year Anniversary of the golf Society. Cost in the region of £40 for all the usuals and the date for your diaries is 12th July 2013. Arrive please at 9.30am.
We would appreciate replies quickly and in order that numbers are good Steve has promised to buy all those that attend a pint afterwards- Good Old Steve.

Next Golf Day - Friday 17th May at The Hertfordshire

The next golf day is nearly upon us and will be at a course some of us have played before, the Hertfordshire, near Broxbourne.  This is a cracking course with really good greens and generally fair to all golfing abilities.

The cost for the day will be £45.00 which will include the usual Coffee/Bacon rolls, 18 holes of golf and
ham, egg and chips meal afterwards.

Hopefully this date will already be in your diaries but we still need to know numbers (there are 24 available). Please let Jules know your availability either way by the 10th May as numbers have to be confirmed to the gold course.

There is a drink up afterwards in Hertford, hopefully you can all get a pass out.

Results - Abbotsley 12th April 2013

On a fine yet sometimes wet day, 20 Datchworth golfing stalwarts turned out and treaded the fairways of Abbotsley GC. It was the usual array of good, bad and shocking (thanks for coming Ray).  The golf course was in good condition and proved to be tricky at times which probably led to the lowish scores, only one player scoring over 36 points.

On a day that will be remembered more by the quality and uniqueness of the golf trophies rather than the golf itself Tom Wood came first with a cracking 40 points having tied his horse to the first tee and 5 furlongs back  in second with 35 points was Danny Horne, tied with Jules on 35 (who lost on countback) who came third.

Tom Wood continued his winning ways by also bagging the longest drive and was joined by his father in the winners enclosure who came nearest the pin.

The winning team was made up of Tom Wood, Tim Mountain and John Coyle - who are all owed a bottle of wine!

Thanks again to our fantastic and exuberant Capitano Mr. Steve Corley (nearly CBE) for his eloquent after dinner speech and prize presentation...... and of course Dave Brown for organising the day - thank you.

Next Golf Day At Abbotsley Golf Club On Friday 12th April 2013

Okay it is time to dust off your clubs and book another day off work. This is a fine course in Cambridgeshire that you need to tick off on your bucket list of golf courses locally. There are 28 places available and there will be all the usual refinements ie bacon rolls/coffee on arrival/golf/dinner/golfing presentations etc. Hopefully our distinguished Captain Mr Steve Corley (almost MBE- missed out AGAIN in the New Years Honours list) will be presenting prizes to the winners and losers as usual.

The original golf course at Abbotsley was designed in 1975. The course was then adapted and added to, in 1986, by leading lady golfer, former British Women's Open Champion and renowned coach Vivien Saunders.

The Abbotsley Golf Course provides a tough challenge, with tight fairways and fast undulating greens, whilst the Cromwell Course is a little more forgiving from the tee, but equally interesting. The Huntingdonshire par 3 course is excellent for beginners or for golfers wishing to hone their short game skills.

Address: Potton Road, Eynesbury Hardwicke, St Neots, Cambridgeshire PE19 6XN
Phone: 01480 474000

Google Maps link to the Golf Club

Future dates for your diary.......  17th May 2013 at The Hertfordshire and 12th July 2013 at Whitehill GC.

Please let me know if you are attending the Abbotsley event ASAP.

Over and Out - Jules.

Christmas Salver Results 27th Dec 2012

This years Salver looked like being a washout if you had read the weather reports beforehand.........as those that didn't turn up presumably had done, and assumed the worst. However for the attendees the weather was a little inclement, but dry for the most part which is all we could ask for.

On the day the format was changed slightly and teams of 3 were sent out and yes most managed to complete 18 holes in about 4 hours which meant an early meal and an unusually early pub session up the Horns.

The team winners were Ed, Woody and Tim. The winner of the prestigious Salver was Mr Wood ( Senior ) with the runner up being Junior ( Tom Wood ) and third being the much improved Ben Briffett.

The booby prizes were won by Darren Smith- 15 points, Henry Mountain scored 16 points, but the biggest loser was Mr Derek McNeil with a gallant 9 points! Please see below the scores on the day and the new handicaps.

We had a great time in the boozer afterwards........sore head the next day for a few.

The next society day will be arranged for end of March, beginning of April, exact date and venue to be confirmed.

On a chatty note thanks to all who have played this year in the Society days out, so far there have been 51 different players which makes us healthy in numbers. Hopefully you will all fancy knocking a golf ball around again sometime in 2013. Or maybe even go on tour- still being organised. This will be around the early June time we reckon. So lets keep our Honorable Capitano Mr Steve Corley  ( just missed out in the New Years Honours list for his CBE ) contented and keep playing golf this year. Over and out Jules
