It was a shame but the weather beat us and due to snow we had to cancel the 2017 Christmas Salver. This means that Reece Pybus gets to hold on to the Salver trophy for another year. This is the third time in the sententious history of the Christmas Salver that this has happened.
Moving on to 2018......
The committee have been busy, dates have been set for future golf days and tours. Our beloved Capitano will be signing off the days booked shortly and you will all be the first to know. Watch this space!
However there is a very special event happening in September 2018 and it is of course The Ryder Cup, where our beloved countrymen and a few European foreigners will be regaining the cup on Froggie soil. It would have been great to have crossed the channel and watched some of it in the flesh, however the Brexit situation means that we have had to look at North Devon as an alternative.
The plan is.......
Wednesday 26th September - Monday 1st October travel down and stay in Barnstaple, North Devon.
Wednesday 26th - Travel down around 9 a.m. and arrive at approximately 1 p.m. Check in to hotel or B&B and play a round of golf at Ilfracombe golf course (
http://www.ilfracombegolfclub.com/) in the afternoon. Drinks and meal in the evening.
Thursday 27th - Get up, play golf mid-morning at Saunton Sands championship course (East or West) (
https://www.sauntongolf.co.uk). Afterwards drinks and meal.
Friday 28th - Get up, play golf at 10 a.m. at Saunton Sands championship course (East or West). Watch the first day of the Ryder Cup (4 foursome (alternate shot) matches and 4 fourball (better ball) matches). Afterwards drinks and meal.
Saturday 29th - Get up, play golf at 9 a.m. at Royal North Devon golf course (
https://www.royalnorthdevongolfclub.co.uk/). Watch the second day of the Ryder Cup (4 foursome matches and 4 fourball matches). Afterwards drinks and meal.
Sunday 30th - Get up, possibly play golf at another venue in the morning or watch the golf. Last day of the Ryder Cup (12 singles matches), eat and drink all day.
Monday 1st - Get up (at sometime or other) and head home.
Saunton Sands
A review of Saunton Sands from Today's Golfer:
"Accuracy is essential otherwise you will be climbing and searching the many sand banks. A brilliantly designed links with a wide variety of holes. Can be fairly benign on a calm day but with a touch of wind a real challenge. Perfect springy seaside turf, wildlife all around, and a collection of classy long par 4s. A shining star of the classy collection of Atlantic Links courses and arguably the best links venue in the south west."
Ilfracombe Golf Course
There cannot be many courses where you can “See the sea from every tee”. A breathtaking clifftop course within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty making a visit to North Devon’s coast a must even during the coldest winter months. It is not the longest but owing to its dramatic location, the wind is usually a major factor. You’ll be knocked out by the awesome views of the coast and harbour, too.
Royal North Devon
Royal North Devon at Westward Ho! can rightly claim to be the cradle of English Golf. Founded in 1864, it is the oldest golf course in the country and is regarded as the St Andrews of the South. The golf course is as tough as any of the UK’s more famous links layouts and has recently been placed in Golf World 's "Top 100 Courses in the World" that a golfer “must play”.
At the moment there are 4 takers for the full trip - El Capitano, Jules and 2 others booked in to the Rolle Quay Inn in the centre of Barnstaple. There are 4 others who have chosen to do Friday to Monday - Gary Covell, Kev Tyler, Dave Brown and 1 other who are booked into the Yeo Dale Hotel.
The whole point of this trip is that people can choose to formulate their own itinerary and come on-board as they wish. However if you are interested you need to book your own accommodation in Barnstaple and the dates you want to go for and then let me know so that we can book the golf for you, hope this all makes sense.
Any questions please email me. Hopefully the itinerary is sufficiently flexible to make it workable for as many as possible.
Costs are dependent on your choice of sleeping arrangements, golf will be arranged according to numbers, travel arrangements are subject to days/times of arrival. We will have to work together to make it a memorable trip.
Future dates of golf days will be forthcoming on the blog, Happy New Year to you all.
