Christmas Salver - 28th December 2015 - Royal Aston Stevenage

So it's come round to that time of year where we don our Winter golf clothes, wrap up warm and take on the worse that the English Winter has to throw at us in the name of the society's end of year extravaganza that is the Christmas Salver.

We will be playing at our usual venue of Royal Aston in Stevenage on 28th December.

Format for the day is as follows:

08:30-08:45 meet at the club for breakfast / tea / coffee

18 holes of golf

09:30 first tee off time

Followed by dinner and presentation of prizes.

We are once again honoured? to have our special guest speaker Mr Trevor Johnson.  No doubt dusting of the same speech that he has presented to us all over the past few years with the usual witty comments, sarcasm, moaning about Harold and his eye for a bargain!

There will be drinks and cards at a pub afterwards, this year's venue will be the Rose and Crown at Tewin.

If you wish to take part in this year's event, please make sure you let Jules know as soon as possible.

Please make sure that if you commit to playing that you actually do attend as there is a lot of logistical work that goes into organising these events and people pulling out at the last minute might be liable to still pay for the day! You have been warned!

Cost for the day is £40.

We need to know if you wish to play by 10th December please.

The Portugal Reckie Tour with Pat.

This very serious tour required extra special personnel to oversee things hence the inclusion of the Royal Mails top man Postman Pat himself, along with his sidekick Jess.

It has to be noted that one or two people need to learn to play cards, Although with the added undercover Mr AJ Dynamo Baxter on tour cards were never quite the same. Shame he could only work his magic on the first day and then the final hole of the last day. The rest of his golf remained a complete mystery. Fortunately someone paid Easyjet to break his clubs on the way back- but they only succeeded in breaking his driver. Obviously the money paid wasn`t high enough.

This was a fabulous tour and a great jolly all round, the humour and banter was sublime albeit the golf was (or could have been better) not the best by those that played. The golf courses were terrific though and Portugal is high on our list for next year, but we may have to check out a further foreign area before committing to tour next year. The things the committee feel that they have to do to keep things up to a high standard for the rest is phenomenal. Luckily our beloved Captain Mr Steve Corley sets high standards (not on a golf course though, as was found out this time)( no more needs to be said on this matter though at present for fear of punishment).

Any way here are a few pics to wet your appetite for next year. Get your name down early as there are likely to be ONLY 16 places and names are already in the hat.

Remember to click on the pictures to see them full size.

Next blog out is for the Christmas Salver which is on the 28th December at Royal Aston again. Further information will be available , but book the date in your diaries. Over and out

Results from Potters Bar GC and next golf day

Another splendid day's golf this time at Potters Bar.  We had an influx of new players, some who played well and some who didn't!  We tried to pick a different venue for a welcome change and I think most will agree that the course played well and apart from the absence of pork the day was good.  Certainly the afters at The Horns were enjoyed by quite a few willing participants!

Winners on the day were as follows:

In third place Rocky with 32 points off 17, second place Phil Marlor 35 points off 14 and the winner on the day was "San Fran" Dave with 37 points off 13 (with a glorious eagle included on the 6th hole).

Team winners were Rocky, Phil Marlor, Woody and Darren Smith with the nearest the pins being won by Darren Smith and Mark Brownjohn.  The turkey of the day was Alan Belt - well done Al and welcome to the society!!

Listed below are the handicaps, effective immediately!

The next golf day (well reminded Gudge) is on the 23rd October 2015 at Wyboston lakes, arrival time is 09:45-10:30, first tee off at 11:00.  Expected cost £38.  Please let Steve or myself know your availability within the next two weeks.

Many thanks, over and out.

Results Whitehill July 2015

Well folks we couldn't have asked for a better day to celebrate our fourth anniversary golf event at Whitehill.  In glorious sunshine, a great turnout of 31 (mostly) able golfers turned up on this wonderfully maintained course to celebrate 4 years of the Datchworth Golf Society. Overall the level of golf was pretty high barring a few players (George)

Crow playing his second shot on the 5th, still on the tee!

The right honourable Captain showing his group how to play the game.

1st Place El Dandido Dan, 2nd place Philly the Kid, 3rd place playing his first round of the year the indomitable Danny Horne playing off a legitimate handicap.

George Wallace took the numpty award and Mark Brownjohn and Martin Thomas off equally legitimate handicaps took the nearest the pin awards.

THE HANDICAP COMMITTEE has now taken a very serious look at a few players and taken a dim view on the integrity of their handicaps. No names will be mentioned, but hopefully you know who you are. Drastic and decisive action has been taken to ensure fair play is ensued herein. Please see the NEW HANDICAPS below. For future reference if you play off a lower handicap at your club you must let the Captain know before the event. No tolerance will be given to those that are flaunting these regulations. JC

Team winners Liam Walker,El Dandido Dan,Mark Poppodopolusius, Martin Thomas.

Spain Tour 2015

Well folks, what a tour. Can`t say too much in case the other halves get on the blog, but you know what I mean ! Fantastic group of guys, great courses, decent hotel, lots of booze, good food and some wicked banter. As usual we had our tour clown on board- no need to mention any names, We also had four new faces........Ben, Gudge, Dan and Psud our touring TV personality; we get all sorts on tour don`t you know.

On the first morning which was hard work for most our gallant winner was Gary, with Rocky second and Jules third. On the second day some very much worse for wear- there were a few that tucked up early for the night and were penalized for their misdemeanors- Crispy came first, Gary second and Roy was third. On the final trophy winning round our TV celebrity Psud who had clearly been resting up and preparing himself for the event all year romped home with a magnificent 5 over par round on the La Cala Europa course. Second overall was Philly the Kid and in third somewhat washed out was Jules !

Here are a few pictures for you to take in what a special tour this was!! Thanks to all for attending and roll on the next one!

Our next event is at Whitehills GC on Friday the 10th July. Our beloved Captain the almost Honourable Mr Steve Corley is expecting a bumper attendance and as such your early RSVP to this fantastic anniversary event would be welcomed at your earliest convenience. We need to know if you can make it by the 4th July. No latecomers allowed!!!

By the way next years tour is already being planned so start saving !!!

Results from Nazeing

Ok folks we got this one wrong this time. This course was in appalling condition and had obviously employed a farmer from a beach in Norfolk to pop down occasionally with 50 tonnes of sand to liberally throw it around on the greens and top the grass on the course wherever he felt like it.

In  future we will not be playing courses like this and will up the ante on course quality and hopefully we will not need to bring out our bucket and spades for future events.

That said 2 people who have obviously played golf on a beach a lot shot to the top with 39 points on the day. Old stalwart Kev Tyler was pipped into second place by the new kid on the block Dan Gatfield who without building any sand castles managed to play some tremendous golf and take the trophy home. Another old stalwart in the form of Rocky took 3rd from Darren Smith with 33 points.

Nearest the pins were John "Guinness Please" Coyle and Kev Tyler.

Team winners were Gary, Kev, Brian and George- Well done guys.

Here are a few pics of the day.

The new handicaps can be seen below.

We'll be in touch with the next golf day event shortly.

Many thanks
Jules
